Yes, once the AQI level reaches 150 or higher, students and staff report indoors. Air purifiers, air cons units and other safety measures are put into place. Classes receive access to general indoor areas such as our indoor kindergarten play ground, canteen, and libraries at scheduled/reserved times to enjoy time outside their classroom. All these listed areas, of course, have air purifiers, air cons, and additional safety measures to ensure good air quality for our students.

The following procedures will be put in place to address the poor air quality; Americana Chinese International School will notify parents and staff via line, Facebook and dojo by 6.30am if the school will close for the day. If the AQI is over 400 and increasing the school board of directors will issue a notice. If the AQI is over 500 school will automatically be closed without question. If the AQI goes over 400 during the day while students are present in school we will remain open and not send students home. Americana Chinese International School will control the air quality, indoors, as much as is possible with our air filtration systems. The AirVisual Node/Pro uses a light scattering laser sensor for PM2.5 measurements. How it works is that within the sensor's measuring 'chamber', a laser light beam is shone onto particles, and this light is then irradiated in all directions from these particles (scattering). A light detector (or 'photometer detector') then measures all of this scattered light, and from this, the sensor can calculate the concentration of particles within the chamber. In this way, the sensor is able to detect near microscopic particles ranging from 0.3μm to 2.5μm. The sensor in the AirVisual Node/Pro also has a small fan to ensure a constant flow of air through the measuring chamber. Each reading reported from the sensor is calibrated by a special algorithm which takes into account external temperature and humidity values.

As you are aware, our school has already installed air purifiers. This week we will be ensuring all rooms have their air purifiers in working order. We do not anticipate air quality being so poor as to be unsafe for outdoor activity. We will, however, monitor the AQI levels daily to ensure that our students are safe while in our school.
