Over the semester, Grade 1 ESL practiced spelling words, sometimes spelling the words with plastic letters and other times writing the spelling words in a rainbow. Grade 1 has also worked on writing. Over several weeks, students chose a habitat, learned about the environment and animals in that habitat and then wrote about the habitat. They also have practiced re-telling stories to encourage them to use their oral English. Their favorite story was “The Gingerbread Man.” Students also used total physical response (TPR) to learn new vocabulary and demonstrate new grammar rules.
